Thomas was everything a woman should want. Smart, sweet, gorgeous… but that first spark I’d felt between us had fizzled. There’s something wrong with me, something broken. Or… at least I thought it was broken. Then I met Steve. We went from spark to raging inferno with one flick of his eyebrow, one dangerous smile, and now all I can think about is the side of myself I’d tried so hard to lock away. He’s everything Thomas isn’t. He’s everything I’ve been missing. Fire and passion… and dominance. If I was a good girl, a vanilla girl, I could have been happy with Thomas. But now that I’ve met Steve, I know that’s impossible.

My name is Jen. I am a submissive.

I’ve deceived everyone around me about who I am, and I’ve lied to myself. But this time I won’t.

This time I will choose happiness… even if it hurts.

Excerpt

“Okay. Jen.” Thomas’ shoulders relaxed in another small release of tension as he gave a slight chuckle. “just for future reference, you might want to think of another way of starting a conversation right after we’ve had sex other than ‘Can we talk?’ followed by ‘Have I ever told you about my past lovers?’”
“Ugh.” I slumped back a bit, groaning. “This is getting all twisted around…”
He laughed, then reached down, kissing the top of my head. “It’s fine. Just tell me what this is about.”
“In my past relationships, I…” I paused, letting out a small sigh. “Well, there have been certain things about them that were…well, aspects of them that have included…umm…” I wasn’t sure exactly how to approach this. This was not a conversation I’d ever thought I was going to need to have with him and coupled with the fact that the discussion had already gotten off to an awkward start, I was quickly beginning to lose my resolve to continue. However, Thomas was patient and didn’t press me.
“Certain,” I picked up where I had stopped. “…certain, uh, what people would call … kinky things.” I looked up at him, hopeful, expectant, and saw his expression change from mild uncertainty to one of bemusement.
“Kinky things?”
“Yeah, you know, kinky…sexual things.”
“Okay.” Thomas frowned, his brows knitting together. He was deep in lawyer mode, and I could almost see his brain attacking this. “Are we talking about things like the toys in your drawer?” He made a slight motion towards the nightstand on my side of the bed.
“Well,” I pursed my lips together, taking a deep breath, trying not to let my frustration show. “Those could be considered part of it, I suppose, but what I’m referring to are things that would be a little more…pronounced than that.”

Author Bio

Shane Starrett has spent twenty-five years writing steamy, erotic technical documents (okay, the erotic part is probably a bit of a stretch) for major companies in the live events industry. His first novel, Submissive Lies, was long in coming, but with guidance from his long-time beta reader of 30 years (Ms. Starrett), it is now complete and available. When he isn’t writing, which isn’t often, he can be found hiking trails up and down the Sierra Nevada’s, and the coastal range in Southern California.

My brother believes he made me a killer. The truth is, I’ve always been different. I can smile while sliding a knife between your ribs—and not feel a moment of regret.

Until Leah.

A man like me shouldn’t have a family. But the minute I opened my eyes from a coma and saw her, I knew I’d forever be tied to her. A nurse who nurtures life. A mother.

I’ve stalked her for two years, unable to stop but refusing to give in to the need to have her. To love her. Until the night her daughter is taken. I’ll light up the world to get Leah’s child back to her.

And then I’ll walk away for good. Not because it’s the right thing to do, but because I know how she’ll look at me after seeing who I truly am.

She’ll see the murderer inside me. And God help me, but she’ll be right.

Excerpt

A ragged sigh escaped Leah when my arm settled across her belly, but she didn’t wake, not then and not when I pulled her into the curve of my body. The silence wrapped around us like a warm blanket, turning tense muscles liquid and soothing the runaway thoughts in my head. Warriors knew to sleep when given the slightest opportunity. I knew to be grateful for the slightest bit of peace, and I reveled in it now.
At least until Leah stirred in my arms. Seconds later her body went rigid.
“It’s all right, just me,” I murmured into her hair.
“Remi.”
My name, husky in her sleep-roughened voice. Blood surged to my cock without my permission. “Yeah.”
Leah tried to turn, to face me, but I tightened my arms. Just a few minutes longer. Or a lifetime. I wasn’t anywhere near ready to let go.
She stilled. Relaxed. Her body went boneless against mine in an age-old display of trust. Leah wasn’t submissive, not anywhere else, but here, now, she was surrendering her body to my demands. It was the kind of gift a man like me would never dream of receiving because we didn’t deserve it.
Leah gave it anyway, hardening my cock even more.

Excerpt

“Charli.” The word was a warning, heavy and gritty. Laced with anger and passion and everything I should run from.
Too bad for him I stopped running a long time ago.
“F*ck you,” I whispered.
I was off my feet before I could register that I’d moved.

***

I picked her up, and in two big paces, I had her back pressed to the huge floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked her kingdom below. It was empty and pale, much like my life had been since I pushed her away all those years ago.
Her nails dug into my neck as her dress hiked around her thighs, her breath fanning hot against my throat. I shoved her harder against the glass with my body, then grabbed both of her wrists in one hand and yanked them above her head.
“No. F*ck you, Miss Vaughn.”
She should have just gone home like a good little girl, and JD could have made sure she was safe, so I’d be safe from this raging need for her that had been licking through my veins, eating me alive for weeks. There was a reason I’d stayed away, damn it. No, instead, she’d insisted on staying for the duration, which meant I couldn’t walk out that door either. And now, here we were.
I sunk into a savage kiss, not bothering with any of the niceties I might have once upon a time. I raked my teeth and tongue across her like a man starving, because that’s exactly what I was. What I had been since the moment she spun back into my orbit the day her mother and grandmother died.
She fought being pinned, bucking like a hellcat on fire and nearly biting my tongue in two, but I kept up my assault, intoxicated with the taste of her after all this time apart. I moved to her cheeks, tasting the salt of her tears. Her eyes. Her jaw. Her throat.
Lust and pure animal need roared through my system like a livewire. I typically prided myself on being the one in control, a man of restraint. With Charli, it was nearly impossible. It always had been.
Her fighting became writhing. Her curses, moans as we found our old rhythm. It was like we’d lost no time. Our heartbeats found their echo.
I released her wrists and cupped her round hips, tracked down her thighs, drawing her skirt up to feel thong and bare flesh. God, her skin was still impossibly soft, like velvet. I traced a fingertip around to find her bare and already wet and needy for me, but I pulled back, even as she pressed forward, her breath catching as she sought more.
I drew back, and her eyes fluttered open, showing me entirely too much, though I knew she never intended to. Not my Charli.
My Charli?
F*ck, this woman was going to be the death of me.
Or I would be the death of her.
Either way, we were going down in flames. It had probably been inevitable since the moment we met when we were kids, our families forging our futures without our consent.
Even then, however, I’d known there was something special about Miss Charlotte Vaughn with those wide, icy blue eyes and innocent smile that spoke of a million pretty promises.
Promises I was too tainted to deserve.

Excerpt

“Let’s play a game, Ace. After all, you’re good at games, aren’t you.” It’s not a question. “I mean, that is what got you here in the first place, isn’t it?”
Our gazes are still locked together as I search for a proper response. Part of me wonders what would happen if I refused, but the other part is dying from curiosity.
He must see the moment I decide I’m willing to play, because his wicked mouth tugs into a knowing grin. The mysterious man in front of me has piqued my curiosity. He’s like a puzzle I’m dying to put together, and his smile is just the tip of the iceberg.
“Perfect,” he mutters under his breath before saying more loudly, “You seem as curious about me as I am about you, so let’s make it interesting. You can ask me anything, and I promise to answer. The trick is, I’m allowed to lie if I choose to do so.”
With a question on the tip of my tongue, my brows pinch together, and he calls me out on it. “What’s your question, Ace?”
I don’t like how easily he can read me, but I ask it anyway. “What’s the point in playing a game where you don’t need to tell the truth?”
The sound of his masculine laugh has a weird way of making my heart pick up a notch and I push away the butterflies that swarm my insides when I realize I might like the sound.
Focus, Ace! I yell at myself.
Inching closer, he answers, “What’s the point of poker without a solid bluff? And you didn’t let me finish. The object of the game is to see how well you can read me. If you call me out for lying, then I have another chance to tell you the truth. But,” —he lifts his finger— “if you accuse me of lying when I’m telling the truth, then you aren’t allowed to ask me any more questions. Understand?”
I nod.
“Perfect. We each get to take turns asking each other questions until we both lose, or I decide I’m done playing.”
Sensing my agitation, he gently lifts my chin with his forefinger, making me look up at him. “My game. My rules, sweetheart.”
My teeth dig into my lower lip as I watch him get distracted by the throbbing bruise on my cheekbone. Clenching his jaw, he softly drags his fingers down my sensitive skin making my eyelids flutter for a split second. “Does it hurt?”
“Is that your question?” I bite out.
With a smoldering look, he volleys, “I suppose it is.”
“Then, no.”
His mesmerizing green eyes flare with amusement before shifting back to my swollen cheek. “Lie,” he murmurs. “Give me the truth.”
“Why would you ask a question when you already know the answer? Of course it hurts. I just got backhanded by a damn gorilla. What’s your name?”
“Kingston.”
Searching his face, I mutter, “Truth.” Calling it like it is.
He nods his approval before taking his turn. “How long have you been counting cards?”
“Professionally?”
“And recreationally,” he clarifies.
“Not long.”
“Lie.”
I grit my teeth. “As soon as I could afford a fake I.D.”
“Which is…”
“Six years. Why did you bring me down here? This isn’t exactly normal behavior for a casino.” I leave out even for one run by the mob.
He drops his hand from my face to his side but doesn’t step back. “Maybe this is normal casino behavior for The Charlette.”
“Lie.” My voice is absolute, brooking no argument.
Kingston grins before adding, “I’ve been looking for someone to help me with something, and you fit the bill.”
“And what bill is that?”
Tapping his tongue against the roof of his mouth, he tsks me. “Uh-uh, sweetheart. My turn. How often do you count at other casinos?”
“Often enough.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“Depends on how badly I need money.”
He tilts his head as he inspects me, making me feel like I’m beneath a microscope with its intensity. “Half-lie. You like counting. You might play more often when you’re needing a little extra cash, but there’s more to it than that. You like taking the power from the casino who swindles innocent gamblers on a daily basis, am I right?”
“Not your turn, sweetheart,” I mimic his condescending tone from moments before.
With a laugh, he lifts his hand to silently offer me the floor. “My apologies.”
I circle back to my question from a second ago. “What makes me a good candidate for whatever you’re needing?”
Scrutinizing me, he answers, “You’re a pretty little advantage player, did you know that?”
What the hell? First, he used the term advantage player, which refers to a person who uses legal methods to gain an advantage while gambling, such as counting cards, but it can also be attributed to poker. No one knows I play poker. No one.
And second, he called me pretty. The word does weird things to my insides, making them turn to Jell-O in the blink of an eye. Subtly, I shake my head once in an attempt to focus and zero in on his face. His mouth. His eyes. His chiseled jaw. I’m looking for a twitch. An itch. A flicker of something that tells me he’s lying.
“That’s a non-answer,” I accuse.
He furrows his brows. “Excuse me?”
“It isn’t exactly a lie, but it isn’t really the answer to my question. You’re not playing by the rules, Kingston.”
Throwing his head back, he laughs. Hard. Apparently, Kingston must find me pretty amusing because for a guy so cold, he does that a lot around me. “I like playing this game with you. Fine. I’m needing someone to be a set of eyes and ears for me. Someone who can go where I can’t. Someone who can fly under the radar.” He motions to me with his hand. “You fit the bill. Why do you like sticking it to the casinos so much?”
An image of my mom flashes before my eyes. “I won’t answer that. Pick another question.”

Excerpt

“You are so beautiful,” I whisper. I know I’m playing with fire right now, but I’m beginning not to care anymore.
Lani licks her lips, it’s like she’s begging for me to kiss her. As much as I want to, I just can’t. I can’t do that, and I can’t do it to Molly. They’re best friends and I wouldn’t want it to destroy their friendship.
I reluctantly let her go. “We’ve got a busy day tomorrow. Maybe we should call it a night.” She follows me out of the pool.
I wrap her towel around her—my eyes never leaving hers as I slowly dry her off. My heart is pounding in my chest, squatting down in front of her I dry her legs off. My eyes drift down to her long shapely legs.
My fingers ghost over her smooth skin. I don’t miss Lani’s quick inhale of her breath or the rapid rise and fall of her chest. If I close my eyes, I swear I can smell her. My dick stands at attention and begs me to be inside her.
“Ahem…you better get inside.” My voice is hoarse, laced with desire. “I’ll-uh… see you in the morning.”
“Goodnight,” she whispers. Her voice is melodic and makes my blood sing. I don’t stand up until she’s inside and I see the guest bedroom light flip on upstairs. Only then do I extinguish the torches and head inside.
When I finally settle into bed, I can’t sleep. Is it because I know she’s upstairs sleeping? Is it because I’m dying to know if she’s wearing that threadbare tank top again? Before I can stop myself, I’m out of bed throwing on some basketball shorts and walking out of my bedroom.
I stand at the bottom of the stairs and take a deep breath. Step by step, I walk silently up the stairs. When I reach the top, I walk toward Lani’s closed door. I lift my hand to knock when I hear a soft moan and a faint buzzing sound. I need to walk away and give her privacy, but instead, I put my ear to the door and listen to her masturbate.
“Oh Damon.”
She just moaned my name and my cock is so fucking hard right now. I wrap my hand around it through my shorts and squeeze, trying to ease the urge to come. Lani comes with a muffled shout and I swear my balls start tingling.
I head downstairs before she catches me, but once I’m in the privacy of my bedroom, I jerk off voraciously until I’m spent and only then do I fall asleep.

Excerpt:

The pained sounds from Willow were real and had the inside of his chest twisting. He hated how her life had been turned upside down. Over the last few hours, he’d asked a lot of her—high-pressure, high-risk things. She’d handled all of it with grit and trusted him with little explanation. It bumped his admiration of her several notches higher. The absolute last thing he should do was go back in the other room, but her crying turned to sobbing, and he didn’t need her falling apart. He threw his T-shirt on, set a five-minute timer—estimating it’d take longer than two to console her but not giving himself enough time to succumb to temptation—and stepped into the bathroom. Sanguine hair dye smeared the edge of the white tub on his right, making it look like a bloodbath. Plastic gloves lay on the floor. Leaving the door ajar, he pivoted left. Willow turned to face him, trembling in front of the sink and mirror. Water dripped from her dark-red hair in rivulets down her delicate body. Her flimsy gossamer underwear was see-through. Blindsided, he stiffened. He pinned his gaze on her face, refusing to veer for a second below her neck. “I don’t look like me.” Tears spilled from her eyes. Unable to stop his feet from moving closer, he went to touch her but thought better of it and drew his hands back to his sides. “I-I hate this hair.” She burst into a series of hiccupping sobs. “None of this is me. Running. Dodging bullets. Stealing cars. Being a fugitive. This hair.” Her raw vulnerability gutted him. He had to say or do something—only a heartless asshole wouldn’t comfort her—but he was frozen in place. “Please, don’t cry.” She reached for him. He couldn’t avoid the collision of contact as she fell against his chest and pressed a palm to her mouth. Or perhaps he didn’t want to. He wrapped his arms around her shivering body and held her, cradling her head against his sore sternum. She was warm, so warm and soft. Her fear was palpable, tearing him up on the inside. She really started sobbing as if she’d been holding back a moment ago. Tightening his embrace, he shushed her and stroked her hair. “Gideon, I can’t do this. I don’t know how. I need things to go back to being normal. I need normal.” “You can do this. Your hair changed, not who you are. I see you, Willow.” She blinked up at him. He wiped the tears still streaming with his fingertips while keeping an arm around her. “Same hazel eyes that can’t decide if they want to be brown or green.” He brushed his knuckles across her cheek, a whisper of touch, and she leaned into his caress. “Same kind spirit.” Her sobs slowed, her breathing steadied, her body growing calmer. “You’re a survivor.I see you. He skimmed her lower lip with the pad of his thumb, heat burning his face. She stilled, like she was holding her breath the same as him. He’d been attracted to scores of women…and then there was this. Not mere attraction but a draw far stronger and more intense. Kissing her would be a catastrophic mistake. An epic disaster. But only a blind monk would have the willpower to resist. Her hands flew to his cheeks as she rose on her tiptoes and yanked his mouth down to hers. Their lips locked—his ability to think rationally shut down on impact—and their tongues tangled in a sweet, filthy slide of a kiss. His heart kicked into a frantic pounding like machine gunfire against his breastbone. On a sharp, mingled breath, it turned deeper, hot and hard and hungry. Her supple body pressed tight to his, her leg hooking on his hip like she wanted to climb him. All her soft warmth ground against the growing bulge in his pants. Every single point of connection sparked more heat. He had to stop this, stop her, stop himself somehow. Then she slid her hand along his torso, down to his erection. He nearly burst from his skin. Gripping the nape of her neck and her hip with his other hand, he jerked her closer. The hard suction of her mouth, the way she licked and laved, tied him up in knots. Shuffling her back against the wall, he palmed her ass and caressed her breasts, flicking a thumb hard over her nipple. It registered on some distant level when the thin mesh of her bra tore in his rough hands that he was being too aggressive. But her moans grew throaty and her hips rocked against his. The absolute last thing he’d do was take her in a rush, in a bathroom, without condoms, when he needed to protect this scared, trusting woman from any danger. And that included him.

Blog Tour: KISS ME NOT by Emma Hart

KMN-BANNER-LIVE

What do you do when you’re the reigning kissing booth champion but the only person you want to kiss is your best friend’s brother?

Kiss Me Not, an all-new hilarious brother’s best friend romance from New York Times bestselling author Emma Hart is available now!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00027]

Let me make this clear right here, right now: I, Halley Dawson, do not care that Preston Wright is kissing other women.

Not a lick. Not at all. Nuh-uh-freakin’-uh.

I do care that he’s doing it six feet away from me behind a gaudy velvet curtain—making him my competition in this year’s kissing contest.

Why do I care, you ask? Because I’ve had an unfortunate crush on the insufferable idiot since I was sixteen years old, but I also know it’s never going to happen.

He’s the Creek Falls bachelor to die for, and I’m the Creek Falls racoon lady who puts peanut butter sandwiches out for them every night.

I’m not going to let him break my four-year-long reign—no matter how many times he breaks the rules and slides the curtain across to do the one thing he’s not allowed to:

Kiss me.

Excerpt:

“I never answered your question.” “What question?” I darted my eyes to the side. “Just now. You asked me if I wanted to kiss you.” I did, didn’t I? Right. “Oh,” was all I said. Slowly, he moved his hand to my chin and gently lifted it. Still, I didn’t look at him, keeping my eyes firmly trained on the front of the tent, even though I was facing him. “Halley.” “Yeah?” “I want to kiss you.” My eyes darted to his. “I thought that’d do it.” His lips twitched, and he lowered his head until I had to fight the urge to close my eyes in anticipation of the kiss that was coming. I swallowed, my lips parting. Preston moved closer. And he kissed my cheek. I jerked out of whatever trance I’d just been in. “What the hell?” He jumped off the stage, grinning. “I guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to break the stalemate, won’t we?” “Oh, hell no!” I jumped off, stalking him to his side of the stage. “You just stood there in front of me and told me you want to kiss me, then kiss my cheek? The hell was that?” His eyebrows shot up, amusement flashing in his eyes. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you wanted to kiss me, too.” “Irrelevant,” I shot back. “But you’re a special kind of asshole to tell a girl you wanna kiss her and then not do it.” I turned around, then stopped. “You know what? When I beat you tomorrow, you can kiss my ass.” “You’re way too mad about this.” “I’m not mad!” My voice raised a few octaves. “I couldn’t care if you want to kiss me or not. I most certainly don’t want to kiss you.” “Why are you shouting at me?” “I’m not—” I was shouting at him. “Whatever,” I said in a normal voice. “Make sure you take that money to the bank. Tell Tish I sent you.” I left him on his side of the curtain and went to get my purse. He could get fucked. After all that where I think I was so damn nervous I broke a sweat, he didn’t even kiss me. I wasn’t lying with what I said. He could kiss my ass. I’d even wear my good panties and bend over for him.

Excerpt:

“You have a suit fitting tomorrow morning.” “Tomorrow morning? I have lots of suits; I’ll make one of those work.” “Are they like the ones you wore to the funeral?” I ask. “Yeah, why?” “Well, they may have fit you five years ago, but they certainly don’t fit you now. I’ll text you the details and add them to your personal calendar.” “You can’t do that without my cell number.” His smugness would be grating if I wasn’t two steps ahead of him. I flash a fake smile. “I already have all of your personal details, Lincoln. Right down to your shoe size. And you can’t be late like you were this morning, so it might be a good idea to avoid the scotch tonight so you’re less bear and more human. You’ll need to use these things called manners. I can email you a refresher on what those are, should you need it.” “Sarcasm is a weapon of the weak.” My ears are on fire as he heads for the door. Jerk. I was being witty, not sarcastic. “Thanks so much for offering to help clean up the mess you made.” I turn to address the crinkled papers scattered on the floor. It’s common courtesy to offer assistance if you’re the one who made the damn mess. Even Armstrong, who is the most epic of douches, has some manners. Usually he’ll try to look up a skirt or down a shirt while he’s being polite, but it’s better than this. I turn to retrieve the papers when two things happen, a power surge ramps up the box fans—it happens at least twice a day, and at the same time Lincoln pulls the door open again. The simultaneous actions create a vortex of air inside my office, and my skirt flutters into the air. Like I’m Marilyn Monroe and I’ve stepped onto one of those subway grates. The fabric rises quickly, and a breeze hits me right between the legs, which is the exact moment I remember that I’m not wearing panties. Because they were covered in the coffee Armstrong spilled in my lap. I drop the papers and battle the fabric back down. It’s fruitless, though, the wind tunnel whirls through the room like Dorothy’s freaking tornado, and the back of my dress goes up. I meet Lincoln’s gaze from across the small room. All it takes is a second of eye contact before those ridiculously blue eyes pull me in, and weird, inappropriate things start happening to my body. It’s irritating as hell. I don’t even like this guy, but my body seems as if it hasn’t gotten the same memo as the rest of me. Even more aggravating is the realization that based on his expression, he totally caught an eyeful of cooch. Lincoln stands frozen at the door, eyes wide and fixed on my crotch, mouth hanging open. “Close the damn door!” My voice is siren high. And loud. “Right. Yes. I’m going. Now.” He steps out of my office, pulling the door closed behind him. My dress settles around my knees. “Dammit.” I drop into my chair, which is probably what I should’ve done as soon as the wind tunnel started, but clearly I’d been too panicked to think straight. On the upside, I went to see my waxer last week, so he’s seen my girl bits when they’re looking their finest. On the downside, my project for the next six months has seen my naked girl bits.

Excerpt:

Jessica… I dart toward the door in the far right corner and enter the bathroom, where I find a giant old-fashioned, barrel-style tub. I open one of the white cabinet doors and also find a towel, but I’m just too wet for it to help. Like that woman was for Craig. Oh God. There I go again. No. No. No. I will not think those thoughts. No more. I’m done. With him. With her. I strip down naked, wrap the towel around me, and hunt for my suitcase, which I hope like heck has the other bag of chocolate I packed. Naked might get a girl in trouble, but I’m alone and it’s not like anyone is going to see me naked anytime soon. I can go right ahead and happily pack a few pounds of chocolate weight on a petite frame that can’t handle a few extra anything. There will be no more men for me. Therefore, there will be no trouble to be found. It’s a great plan and on this one, really truly, I dare to say, what could go wrong? I exit the bathroom into the bedroom and scream at the sight of a man standing there. The cowboy who saved me on the side of the road is not only here, minus his trench coat and wearing a snug black T-shirt, he’s bigger and broader than I remember. The bedroom shrinks. My heart races. “I was right,” I accuse, clutching at my towel, the only thing between me and him besides footsteps. “You are a serial killer.” I search for a weapon and I don’t know why there’s a giant flashlight on the nightstand, but it’s long and strong, and I grab it, my new prize. I also manage to drop my towel. Oh my God, I’ve dropped my towel. Goose bumps lift on my naked body and, Lord help me, my nipples pucker. I try to grab my towel and almost drop the flashlight, which is a better weapon than terry cloth. I commit to the flashlight and my state of undress. “I will hit you if you come near me,” I warn. “I mean, kill you.” That sounds unrealistic and therefore lacks the bite I intend. “I will hurt you.” He arches a brow and, to my shock and his credit, he doesn’t so much as blink at anything below my neck. I don’t know if I should be appreciative or offended. Am I not distracting? Am I not worthy of a look? Obviously, my ex didn’t think so and— The cowboy starts walking toward me. “What are you doing? Stay back.” I hold up the flashlight, but I’m the one backing up, hitting the wall with a hard thud. He snatches up my towel and hands it to me, his hand brushing my nipple in the process. I suck in a breath, even as the flashlight is removed from my hand and tossed on the bed. “The game is over. Getting naked won’t stop me from calling the police.” “I’ll knee you. I’ll scream. I’ll—” “You’re standing in my property, sweetheart.” “This is not—” “And yet it is. You picked the wrong house to squat in and the wrong town. I saw where you turned off. I knew where you were headed. Wrong choice, sweetheart.” “Stop calling me sweetheart. And what the hell are you talking about? Squatter? What is a—” A bad feeling hits me. “You think I’m freeloading by sneaking in here and now I’m trying to buy a bed with my naked body? Really?” “If the shoe fits, sweetheart.” I scowl. “Stop calling me sweetheart. Since when do women seducing men try to hit them with a flashlight? Then again, we are talking about you here. I’m pretty sure you could make anyone want to hit you. Maybe that’s the only foreplay you know. A flashlight and a—” “Stop,” he orders, his hands pressing to the wall on either side of me, and now his big body framing my naked body.

Excerpt:

Redmayne turned to her, looming closer. Larger. “Don’t,” he whispered. “Don’t what?” “Don’t try to make me a good man.” “I wouldn’t dream of it, Your Grace.” When she should have retreated, she didn’t. Instead, she finished her whisky, enjoying the warm languor spreading from her middle to her blood. “Good.” He became very still, watching as she licked the last of the honeyed liquor from her lips. The cool of the night suddenly disappeared, the air turned heavy with salt, and moisture, and . . . something more illicit. Possibly dangerous. “Have you ever really been kissed, Alexandra Lane?” She blinked. And froze. However, the usual paralyzing terror that would have cinched around her bones at such a predicament . . . didn’t. Fear was more of a faint shimmer through veins made sluggish with whisky. It was accompanied by another more curious emotion. Not excitement, but something adjacent to it. Why did he want to know? What did he hope her answer would be? Indeed, what should she say? The truth, of course. A lie would not serve her here, and besides, she’d too many of those on her conscience to bother with a flippant fib in the dark. “N-no.” She wished her voice were stronger. That she’d had a different, more worldly experience to share. But alas, she’d never allowed a man close enough to kiss her. As far as she was concerned, men had long ago ceased wanting to. “I thought not,” he murmured, setting his glass next to hers on the banister. Alexandra forced another swallow. “How—I mean— why thought you not?” And why was she suddenly speaking nonsense? A faint hint of arrogance brushed at his lips. “Men like me can just tell.” Her heart kicked against her lungs, evoking shorter, shallower breaths. “Men like you?” “Hunters.” The vibration of the word spread down her spine and unfurled in the most alarming places. “Your lips, innocent as they are, beg to be kissed whenever I am near. Your tongue moistens them. Your teeth worry at them. And when I stare, as I am doing now, they soften and part, like an invitation . . .” Stunned, Alexandra curled her lips around her teeth as if to hide them from him. Had he really gleaned all that from her mouth? Had her lips truly betrayed her so? He paused, glancing up. “Your eyes are always afraid, though. I think it’s because you can sense I want to kiss you, too.” “Y-you do?” He nodded, his own lips melting into a soft smile at the abject astonishment in her question. “Since the moment we met on the train platform, I’ve dreamt of kissing you in more than a dozen ways.” The sound she emitted was somewhere between a cough and a gasp. Were there more than a dozen ways to kiss? How many more? “We . . . we shouldn’t be speaking of such things, Your Grace.” She turned away from him, suddenly trembling at the edge of an abyss, ready to leap into madness. He drew close, never once touching her. But the heat and strength of him stretched beyond his physical being, threading through the night toward her, endangering her composure. Her resolve. “It’s wrong, I know it,” he murmured, his voice containing an agony that tugged at her racing heart. “I’m to announce my engagement to your friend this very night, and all I can think of is what you’d taste like. I’m more of a monster than any scars or scandals I claim. But I’ve not kissed a woman since before the jaguar. I’ve not particularly wanted to until your lips drove me to distraction.” Unable to hear any more, she whirled around. “Would you marry me?” The idea had sparked like a fever, an idea that could fix everything. An idea that would release them all from the clutches of their sins. All it would cost was her soul.

About Kerrigan

Kerrigan has done many things to pay the bills, from law enforcement to belly dance instructor. Now she’s finally able to have the career she’d decided upon at thirteen when she announced to her very skeptical family that she was going to “grow up to be a romance novelist.” Whether she’s writing about Celtic Druids, Victorian bad boys, or brash Irish FBI Agents, Kerrigan uses her borderline-obsessive passion for history, her extensive Celtic ancestry, and her love of Shakespeare in almost every story.

She lives in a little Victorian coast town on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State with her wonderful husband. When she’s not writing you can find her sailing, beach combing, kayaking, visiting wineries, breweries, and restaurants with friends, and hiking…okay…wandering aimlessly clenching bear spray in the mountains.
