Thatโ€™s what my ex said after our son was born, leaving me a single dad.   These days, my world consists of two things: Noah and my bar. Until herโ€”the woman I want โ€”but can never have. My exโ€™s sister wasnโ€™t supposed to be stirred into the mix.   Even though I try to push her away, my son falls in love with her. As much as I want to keep my distance, I canโ€™t break his heart.   Lines become blurred, and fighting our attraction becomes nearly impossible. Even though we know itโ€™s wrong, desire doesnโ€™t always fade away. As soon as we cross that line, nothing will be the same and everything will fall apart.   ๐ด๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘–๐‘ก ๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘’๐‘ . Chapter One Jamie Five Years Later Nine hours down. Three to go. Three hours until I can go home, finish that box of Thin Mints I shouldnโ€™t have bought, and binge-watch a show on Netflix. Netflix and cookies. Netflix and single. Netflix and story of my life. โ€œTell me he finally agreed?โ€ Lauren, our charge nurse, asksโ€”referring to the appendicitis patient whoโ€™s been refusing an appendectomy all night. I nod. โ€œAfter his wife promised to buy him a new TV.โ€ She scoffs. โ€œIโ€™d love to say someone being bribed to have life-saving surgery is a shocker, but after working in the ER for so long, Iโ€™m not easily shooketh.โ€ โ€œTell me about it.โ€ I glance around the emergency room. โ€œWhatโ€™s next for me?โ€ Itโ€™s been a slow night at Anchor Ridge Memorial Hospital, and as much as thatโ€™s a good thing, it can get boring. She points down the hall. โ€œExam room three. Five-year-old with a fever.โ€ Her tone turns bubbly as she wiggles her shoulders. โ€œDad is super hot, by the way.โ€ I shake my head and tap my knuckles against the triage desk. โ€œIโ€™ll let you know if I need anything.โ€ โ€œAsk him for his number,โ€ she half-whispers with a thumbs-up. I roll my eyes and dismissively wave my hand. โ€œAbsolutely not.โ€ โ€œAll work and no play makes Jamie a grumpy doctor.โ€ โ€œYeah, yeah, yeah.โ€ I spin on my heel and walk to the room. The door is cracked, and I knock, snatching a pair of latex gloves on my way in. โ€œHello, Iโ€™m Dr.โ€”โ€ I stop, stumble back two steps, and cover my mouth with my hand. Holy crap. My body tenses, and as soon as my gaze meets his, his jaw flexes. I struggle for words as anger and disgust line his face. Words Iโ€™d planned if this moment ever happened. Unfortunately, those words become a scared bitch and run away. โ€œCohen,โ€ is all I manage in a whisper. He stands tall from his chair, his narrowed eyes pinned to me, and moves to the side of the bed, blocking my view of the patient. Laurenโ€™s words hit me. โ€œFive-year-old …โ€ My attention slides from Sir Pissed Off, and I shift to the left. โ€œOh my God,โ€ I whisper, gaping at the little boy in the bed. A little boy whose eyes are sleepy and nose is red and irritated. Those sleepy eyes, a walnut-brown with a slight slant, match his fatherโ€™s. The same with his thick ash-brown hair. But the dimple in his chin and heart-shaped face match hers. โ€œIs this …?โ€ My hand shakes when I point at him. Itโ€™s a dumb question. Even if he says no, heโ€™ll be a liar. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ he repeats, his tone harsh. If I wasnโ€™t at a loss for words, my smart-ass self would throw out something along the lines of, What do you think, dumbass? Iโ€™m sporting a doctorโ€™s jacket with my name embroidered on it. But I donโ€™t. Because I canโ€™t. Itโ€™s a challenge, wrapping my head around them being here, let alone dragging out my sarcasm. โ€œIโ€™m your doctor,โ€ I finally say before signaling to the boy. โ€œIโ€™m his doctor.โ€ Sound cool. Confident. Youโ€™re the fucking professional here, Jamie. โ€œWe want a different doctor,โ€ he hisses, his voice low enough so only I can hear. โ€œIโ€™m the only doctor on shift tonight.โ€ Iโ€™m speaking to Cohen, but the boy holds my interest. Heโ€™s watching this exchange, his eyes pinging back and forth between his father and me with curiosity on his tired face. โ€œWeโ€™ll go to another hospital then.โ€ โ€œWhy, Dad?โ€ the boy whines, sniffling. โ€œI donโ€™t feel good, and what if I puke in the car?โ€ โ€œI want another doctor.โ€ His broad shoulders draw back. He raises a brow when I hold up a finger, turn, and scurry out of the room. I rush over to Lauren. โ€œCan you watch the boy in three for a minute? I need to talk to his father privately.โ€ She peeks up at me from her computer and tilts her head to the side. โ€œYeah … sure.โ€ Cohen is pacing the room when we walk in. โ€œA word,โ€ I say, jerking my head toward the doorway. Cohenโ€™s attention darts to the boy, and he delivers a gentle smile. โ€œIโ€™ll be right back, buddy.โ€ He gives him a quick peck on the head and swings his arm toward the door, his eyes cold. โ€œAfter you, Your Highness.โ€ Lauren throws me a curious glance when he walks past her, and I shrug as if this isnโ€™t about to be awkward city up in here. As we leave, I hear Lauren asking the boy what his favorite cartoon is. Cohen keeps his distance while I lead us into a private room, the one reserved for breaking bad news to families. I speak as soon as I shut the door., โ€œCohenโ€”โ€ Too bad he doesnโ€™t let me get more than his name out. Rude. His deep-set eyes level on me. โ€œThis is a conflict of interest, Jamie. The nurse can help us. We donโ€™t need you.โ€ โ€œWe donโ€™t need you.โ€ The memories of the last time he said those words to me smack into me like a headache. It was the last time I saw him. The last time he looked at me with the same resentment. Either he doesnโ€™t realize how hard his insult hit me or he doesnโ€™t care. I snort, anger biting at me. โ€œWhat do you think Iโ€™m going to do, huh? Kidnap him?โ€ โ€œConsidering who youโ€™re related to, who knows?โ€ โ€œWow.โ€ I clench my fists to hold myself back from smacking him in the face since his words are like a slap in mine. โ€œYou have some nerve.โ€ Itโ€™d make for some bad headlines if a doctor slapped a patientโ€™s father. Thereโ€™s no apology on his face when he holds up his hands. โ€œJust saying it how I see it.โ€ โ€œThen allow me to say it how I see it.โ€ I thrust my finger toward the door. โ€œYou have a sick son in there, and itโ€™s my job to treat him. Donโ€™t like it? I donโ€™t give a shit.โ€ I shove past him, stalk out of the room, and donโ€™t check to see if heโ€™s following me. โ€œEverything okay?โ€ Lauren asks, her eyes glancing over my shoulder, and I realize Cohen is behind me, still keeping his distance. โ€œPeachy,โ€ I chirp before approaching the bed and smiling down at the boy. โ€œWhatโ€™s your name, honey?โ€ โ€œNoah,โ€ he croaks. Even though I was sure it was him, my head spins at his confirmation. I tenderly squeeze his arm, and my tone turns cheerful. โ€œHi, Noah. Iโ€™m Dr. Gentry. Can I ask some questions about how youโ€™re feeling?โ€ He nods. Cohen stalks to the other side of the bed, his eyes on me, and Lauren migrates to the corner, her nosy ass interested in this shitshow. โ€œHe has a fever,โ€ Cohen tells me, his tone softer. โ€œFor how long?โ€ He scratches his scruffy cheek. โ€œOver twenty-four hours.โ€ โ€œAppetite?โ€ He shakes his head. โ€œNot even sugar. I can hardly get him to drink, and he has no energy, which is very rare for him.โ€ โ€œCough?โ€ โ€œYes.โ€ His jerk attitude settles while we turn our attention to Noah. I ask question after question as I take his temperature and go through all the motions. โ€œSymptoms tell me itโ€™s the flu,โ€ I say, removing my gloves and tossing them into the trash. โ€œWeโ€™ll do a test, and I also want to run some blood work to make sure weโ€™re not missing anything.โ€ Cohen nods. โ€œThank you.โ€ I smile at Noah. โ€œWeโ€™ll get you back to feeling good in no time.โ€ I give Lauren, whoโ€™s gathering supplies for the test, a head nod and leave the room. Iโ€˜ll definitely be pairing wine with those Thin Mints tonight. Lauren comes scurrying into the doctorsโ€™ lounge ten minutes later. โ€œWhoa, what was that about? Dude was super nice to me but acted as if youโ€™d pissed in his Cheerios.โ€ Here goes. A chill sweeps up my neck. โ€œThatโ€™s my sisterโ€™s ex … and her son … the ones she left.โ€ โ€œOh, Jerry Springer.โ€   TEASERS     COMING SOON #2 Shaken โ€“ Releasing September 22 US: https://amzn.to/2zCyzaR UK: https://amzn.to/3dIdiLY CA: https://amzn.to/2xXQKYc AU: https://amzn.to/3bv9dJx B&N: https://bit.ly/2YZiyqh Kobo: https://bit.ly/3fPgveC Apple Books: https://apple.co/3fHa3pM Google Play: https://bit.ly/3dLFhdp #3 Straight Up โ€“ Releasing February 2, 2021 US: https://amzn.to/3cuc1YD UK: https://amzn.to/2WqgOVo CA: https://amzn.to/3cxd4H6 AU: https://amzn.to/2YZjHy7 B&N: https://bit.ly/2WYy7fs Kobo: https://bit.ly/3cvkCKC Apple Books: https://apple.co/2z5bhdT Google Play: https://bit.ly/2AqTgqX   ABOUT THE AUTHOR Charity resides in Indianapolis, Indiana.
