I stormed up the stairs and headed straight to my old room—his room. But

when I got to the top of the stairwell, I swallowed the words I’d been prepared to

unleash. The unexpected sight of Caleb doing pull-ups met my eyes. He used a bar

affixed to the top of the door to lift himself up. He wore a T-shirt that rode up each

time he rose. His hard abs were now staring me in the face, ripples of carved muscle.

He had black wrist wraps on. He’d turned my old room into a home gym.

He was a bastard—but there was no denying he was beautiful.

I cleared my throat. “Did my father give you permission to put that thing in

the doorway?”

The house shook as he landed on his feet. “Well, hello, Teagan. Amazing how

easy it is to walk up the stairs, isn’t it? He grabbed a towel and wiped the sweat off

his forehead. “And yes, in fact, your father did give me permission to put the bar up.”

I came out with it. “You think you know it all, don’t you? Who are you?”

He glared at me. “Who am I? Well, nice of you to ask, Teagan.” He threw his

towel down on the desk. “You’ve had no interest in getting to know me from the

moment I walked in the door. But since you finally did inquire… Hi, I’m Caleb Yates.

Happy to be here. I have no clue what I’m doing with my life and have a somewhat

crappy family situation back in England. So, I came to a strange country for the first

time to get away for a bit. I miss my mum, but the good news is, I’ve just moved into a house where everyone is cordial—except for the cranky

girl in the basement.

Wow.

“That’s a bit harsh, don’t you think?”

He came closer, and the smell of his cologne mixed with sweat

was…interesting. Couldn’t say it was a bad thing, that’s for sure.

“You didn’t have to write me a snooty email, Teagan. You can come talk to me

if I do something to piss you off. If you write me emails like that when I’m right

upstairs, that’s the kind of response you’re going to get, each and every time.”

He had a point. The email was a bit cowardly of me. Yet I’d still managed to

convince myself it was a good idea. He was right. Anything I needed to say to him, I

should be able to say to his face. Quite honestly, the benefit of that was also his

face—getting to look at it, I mean. It turned out, looking at him was a lot more fun

than avoiding eye contact had been. Thank goodness he can’t read my mind right

now.

Seeing that he actually seemed angry as opposed to amused caused me to

change my tune—that and perhaps his scent going straight to my head as it followed

my mind right into the gutter.

He held out his hand. “Give it to me.”

I looked down at my empty hands. “Give you what?”

“The stick in your arse. Take it out and give it to me.”

I crinkled my forehead. “What?”

He wiggled his fingers. “Come on. Hand it over.”

Genuinely curious as to where he was going with this, I motioned with my

hand, pretending to remove the imaginary stick from my derriere and throwing it

over to him.

He pretended to catch it, then let it weigh him down. “It’s bigger than I

thought.” Looking around he said, “I’m gonna find a space for it. Hang on.”

I laughed, against my better judgment. He shoved the imaginary stick under

his bed and wiped fake dust off his hands.

“Now that that’s out of the way, why don’t we start fresh?”

SYNOPSIS

The beginning of my sophomore year in college was off to a rough start.

On the first day of orientation, I had an altercation with an infuriating British dude in a campus bathroom.

(The ladies’ room was out of order. So, I used the men’s room. Don’t judge.)

I got home later that night and realized that the foreign student we were expecting to rent a room in my parents’ house was allergic to our cat.

So, the spare room went to someone else: Caleb—the British guy from the men’s room.

And so it began…my love-hate story with Caleb Yates. Or was it hate-love in that order?

The guy knew how to push every one of my buttons.

Sometimes I’d email him to express my aggravation and disdain.

He’d actually rewrite my own words and send them back to me.

That was the type of infuriating person Caleb was.

So frustrating.

And…

Sometimes incredibly funny and endearingly sweet.

And hot.

He eventually grew on me, and Caleb soon became one of my best friends that year.

Too bad he was headed back to England soon, so nothing could happen between us—for so many reasons.

I definitely couldn’t fall in love with him, especially since all we had was just one year.

Narrated by Andi Arndt & Jacob Morgan: https://adbl.co/2UFn2An Paperback: https://amzn.to/2SxZThR       Blurb: Swallowing lies has never felt so good. Reed freaking Rivers. I wouldn’t trust a word out of the arrogant music mogul’s mouth if his gold-plated tongue were notarized. The Man with the Midas Touch would say anything to get me into his bed, and I know it. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want him to succeed. Indeed, the moment I laid eyes on Reed while he was speaking at an on-campus event I’d crashed, my body physically ached to feel his golden fingers—and tongue—all over me. Unfortunately, though, I can’t give into my powerful craving to jump Reed’s cocky bones. Not until I’ve figured out my best strategy with him . . . The truth is Reed has something I desperately want. Something my heart desires even more than my body craves one night of delicious fun with the yummiest man alive. Reed assumes he’s running this game of seduction. He thinks he’s a thirty-four-year-old big cat on the prowl, and I’m nothing but a blushing twenty-one-year old field mouse with stars in my eyes. Yeah . . . no. As Reed is about to find out, he’s not the only cat on the hunt in this game of cat-and-mouse . . . . BAD LIAR is the first book of the standalone REED RIVERS TRILOGY. The full trilogy is BAD LIAR, BEAUTIFUL LIAR, and BELOVED LIAR, to be read in order.     Excerpt: As I start wrangling glasses off the bar, my gaze finds Georgina’s on the other end of the bar. Instantly, my blood flash-boils at the way she’s looking at me— like she wants to suck my dick. I smile, and Georgina looks away, her face blushing crimson. And, just this fast, I know a certain something about Little Miss Georgina Ricci . . . I’m not sure how much of my exchange with the blonde Georgina overheard, but I’m pretty sure it was enough for her to realize I’m maybe more of an asshole than she’d previously thought . . . Which is okay. Because, based on the heated look Georgina just flashed me before looking away, she very much likes assholes.   About the Author: USA Today and internationally bestselling author Lauren Rowe lives in San Diego, California, where, in addition to writing books, she performs with her dance/party band at events all over Southern California, writes songs, takes embarrassing snapshots of her ever-patient Boston terrier, Buster, spends time with her wonderful family, and narrates audiobooks. From author K. Michelle comes a thrilling NEW dark series.

A hate fuelled romance between Cohen and Dessa…

Do I scare you, Little One?

Do I make your knees shake and hands tremble? Does your heart race and your lips quiver around me? I’m your worst nightmare, lurking in the black oblivion that surrounds you. Always watching. Always waiting. They call me Priest, and I’ll make you repent for your sins. But I won’t be able to protect you from mine.

Do I scare you, Cohen?

Does my mere presence heighten your pulse and warm the blood in your veins? Do I stir the deepest parts of you? The parts you buried deep inside long ago? Admit it, Cohen, I’m a thrill, scattered within the deepest layers of your mind. Always tempting. Always enticing. You found me in the woods. You were a danger, and I was naïve. But now I want the wolf that hunts me.   Call it a truce. Call it a surrender. He needs justice. I need answers.

It’s us against them.

Cohen may have claimed me, but Sanctum wants to own me. They plan on collecting.

But so am I.

EXCERPT:

Silence sets over us like a warm blanket. I look up at him, our eyes connecting, both of us wanting to say something, but the words aren’t coming out. He beats me to it, though. “When was the first moment that you knew you hated me?”

The question catches me off guard, making me pause. “The first time I met you.” I wipe my hands off and set the bag to the side. “When was the first moment that you knew you hated me?”

He smiles a genuine smile, and it makes me hate him just a little more for being so beautiful. “The first time I met you.”

I roll my eyes and look up, but his fingers catch my chin, his eyes hanging onto mine. “Now ask me when was the first moment I knew I loved you.”

The whisper of those words lights goosebumps down my body. My heart races while my breathing stops. “Ask me, Little One.” I try to calm my erratic nerves and shaky palms.

“When was the first moment you knew you loved me?”

He smiles that smile again. “The first time I met you.”

About the author:

I go by Karlee. I was born and raised in Michigan, but now live in Southern California. I’m horrible at “About Me’s,” so bear with me. 😉

When I moved to California, I worked at a gym and met the most beautiful soul, Trini.

Our friendship was instant–we just clicked. Trini had Stage 4 Colon Cancer and was taken from us way too soon. No matter how much you think you’re prepared for something like this, when it finally happens, it feels catastrophic and devastating. Trini inspired my very first book, Sooner Than You Think. The idea came to me shortly after she passed, and the idea of writing a book was daunting. Self-doubt set in, and I never even tried.

Fast forward to May of 2019. After twenty-seven years of never really knowing what my purpose is, what I should do, or what I was meant for, I sat on my bed after putting my son to sleep and felt lost. My eyes kept looking at my computer until I grabbed it, opened Word, and thought, “let’s just see what happens.” Well, in less than a year this is now my third book, and let me tell you, I love doing this. This is it. I’ve found my passion and I love connecting with you readers. I’ve met the most amazing people throughout this journey, and I’ve never been so glad I pushed fear away and took the leap. I will always keep writing. Even if.

Kiss the Stars
A Falling Stars stand-alone romance from A.L. Jackson
Coming March 5th

“You don’t even know what you’re asking for, princess.”
She let go of a soft, cynical laugh. “I’m no princess, Leif.”
No rational thought remaining, I edged up behind her like I had some kind of right.
Pretending in that singular second that I wasn’t committing a thousand wrongs.
Tension bound the room. Leaving me in shackles I couldn’t bear.
Consequences be damned, I leaned in and murmured at her ear, “You’re right. You’re an angel. So sweet you’re unreal.”
My fingertips grazed her hip.
A shock raced up my arm.
Need and lust and gluttony.
I gulped, breathing her in.
Cocoa and cream.
She peeked back at me, everything in her demeanor shifting in a flash.
Sadness flooding in.
“Then why am I the one being condemned?”

Excerpt Reveal: INAPPROPRIATE by Vi Keeland

Excited about Vi Keeland’s upcoming release, Inappropriate?

Check out this SNEAK PEEK

I wondered if he’d be here.

I was mid-conversation with some former colleagues I hadn’t seen in a few years when I got my answer. The sight of him made me lose my train of thought.

On the other side of the room, Grant Lexington stood wearing a classic black tuxedo. He was talking to an older gentleman, which gave me the opportunity to really take him in—tall, broad shoulders, yet not overly bulky, a narrow waist with one hand resting casually in his pants pocket. Even from a distance, his confidence registered. There was something about the way certain men held themselves that showed they were in charge, and that really worked for me. It could take a man who was a seven and make him an eleven in my book. On the other hand, a handsome ten with a meek personality could be reduced to a five.

Mr. Confident held a drink in his left hand and raised it to his mouth, but he stopped before drinking. He seemed to sense something and looked around the room. When his eyes caught mine, a slow, wicked smile spread across his face. He excused himself from the conversation and strode toward me.

My body tingled as I watched him approach with long strides, and I turned from the group I’d been standing with.

“What a pleasant surprise,” he said.

I tried to appear casual as I sipped my champagne. “I’m filling in for Bickman.”

He nodded. “Of course.”

Grant eyed the group next to me. “Are you here with a date?”

“No. You?”

He smiled and shook his head. “Would a compliment be unwelcome? I wouldn’t want to sexually harass you.”

“Compliments are always welcome, Mr. Lexington.”

His eyes sparkled. Taking hold of my elbow, he led me a few feet away from the group I’d been standing with. “That’s a dangerous thing to say to a man like me.”

“What was the compliment anyway?”

Grant’s eyes swept over me. “You look beautiful tonight.”

I blushed. “Thank you.”

Grant stopped a waiter as he passed. He gulped back the rest of the amber liquid in his glass and slipped the flute of champagne from my hand, setting them both down on the waiter’s tray.

“I was drinking that.”

He motioned for the waiter to move along and returned his attention to me. “I’ll get you more when we’re done.”

“Done with what?”

He held out his hand. “Dance with me.”

I shook my head. “I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.”

He smirked. “I’m fucking positive it’s not.”

Excerpt

Sunday

“I really enjoyed our dinner. Thank you for going with me.” Bo paused. “Crap, that’s my dad’s voice, come on.” He wrapped Sunday’s hand in his and pulled her forward just as his father and the group of men he was with rounded the corner, Bo sank deeper into the bushes, pulling Sunday against him. She glanced up; they were so close, she could feel his warm breath on her face, smell the toasted sugar from the Crème Brûlée they had shared. As swiftly as he had reacted and pulled her into him, he lowered his mouth to hers.
The breeze whipped through her hair, the branches of the shrub poked into her skin, but nothing was going to make her pull away. She couldn’t believe that she was acting so scandalous, so unprofessional, so Adeline.
That lost thought made her smile.
Bo didn’t break their connection as he opened one eye to stare at her. Sunday wondered if his father had walked past yet.
“Your dad?” She tried to whisper around his lips that were still on hers.
“He’s right behind you,” Bo whispered against Sunday’s lips before resuming his assault on her mouth.
Sunday used these last few seconds, however long she had to examine him, feel him, how firm were his muscles, his chest? She ran one hand along the placket of his shirt, her fingers lightly slipping between the buttons to touch his undershirt. She had been expecting warm skin. The disappointment was like picking up a glass and expecting to drink soda, but after you swallowed, discovering it was plain ole water. It was startling enough to pull Sunday back to her senses. She looked up and realized that Kai was long gone. Her cheeks turned a rosy pink. Bo noticeably stiffened. He must have been bracing himself for her rising anger. But she refused to give it to him–she had wanted that kiss just as much. Instead, she let out a huff and marched off, no shouts, no witty comebacks, nothing.
“Come on, Sunday, please. You can’t tell me you didn’t like it. It was wonderful. Admit it. I mean . . . I liked it. I wanted to kiss you. I’ve been wanting to kiss you.”

***

Bo

He stood under the scorching hot water flow over his body. Maybe it would wake him up and make him realize that sharing a room with Sunday Prescott was a big mistake. The woman had no clue that her innocence was a turn on, making her a bit beguiling. He was allowing the lower half to think for the upper half. But he needed to relieve this pressure, this ache he had for that infuriating woman.
Thoughts of her fiery temper and her bright smile filled his mind as he slid his hand down his growing penis. Squeezing the base, he released a guttural moan. The water sloshing over him aided him as he stroked from the shaft upward, his thumb capturing at the underside of the head.
Her laughter. He stroked slowly and steadily and then quickened.
Her damn scent. He stroked faster as the release built inside him. The way her lips felt on his. The storm that had brewed inside him thundered out with each thrust of his hips into the air, no warm woman, no Sunday.

Excerpt

The thought of warmth, of sitting by a fire—if she was lucky—forced her to increase her pace. And like a miracle sent from heaven, she was within twenty feet of a small cabin decked out with a short porch, just enough room to fit a bench.
Her steps slowed.
She was freezing. Maybe to the point of hypothermia. Okay, probably a little exaggeration on her part, but she was bone-deep cold.
Yet, she walked like a snail, taking her time to the front door.
What would she say?
Better yet, what would he say?
Well, James wasn’t a cruel man, he wouldn’t turn her away. He’d let her in. Let her warm up.
But would he accept her apology? Could they go back to their easy camaraderie? Could they still be friends and hang out even if he didn’t work at the hospital anymore?
Only one way to find out.
Moving faster, she walked right up to the door and knocked loudly. No hesitation. No thinking about his reaction.
Shivering, more than she had when she had been walking, she wondered if she didn’t knock hard enough. She thought she had. But why wasn’t he answering?
Raising her gloved fist again, she swung it forward, nearly tripping on her feet when the door swung open. Losing her balance from the surprise, her fist knocked into his chest instead of the door.
James caught her around the waist, holding her steady.
The shock in his eyes mesmerized her. A mixture of confusion, surprise, and amazement.
“Erin? What…” His brows puckered low. “What are you doing here?”
That long treacherous walk she just completed, she had all the time in the world to come up with something good to say.
And nothing. No words came out. Not even her apology she wanted to offer.
Although she couldn’t feel anything through her large winter coat, his soft touch, his sweet hands on her waist was rendering her speechless.
She had never been in his arms before. Not even in a small hug.
Right now, right here, in this moment, she wanted to be completely in his arms. She wanted to close the distance and soak up his warmth, his kindness, his sweetness. Let him know in that one big gesture how much she cared about him. Because no matter what anyone said or thought about him, he was a sweet, kind, thoughtful man.
When was the last time someone other than his sister told him how important he was in their lives?
Without a word, she dropped her fist from his chest, stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him.

Dirty Letters

A Contemporary Romance Novel

EXCERPT REVEAL:

The small dining room table had a pile of mail. I’d had Dad’s mail forwarded to my house, so mostly it was just catalogs and junk. Once a month, Mrs. Cascio sent me everything that arrived, even though I’d told her it wasn’t necessary. I mindlessly fingered through the pile, not expecting to see anything worth keeping. But I stopped at an envelope addressed to me—well, not me, but Luca Ryan. That was a name I hadn’t heard in a long time. In second grade, my teacher, Mrs. Ryan, started a pen pal writing program with a small town in England. We weren’t allowed to use our real last names for safety reasons, so the entire class used her last name—hence I was Luca Ryan. I checked out the return address for the sender’s name.

G. Quinn

Wow, really? It couldn’t be.

I squinted at the postmark. It was from a PO box in California, not England, but I didn’t know any other Quinn other than Griffin. And the handwriting did look pretty familiar. But it had been close to eight years since we’d exchanged letters. Why would he write now? Curious, I ripped it open and scanned right to the bottom of the letter for the name. Sure enough, it was from Griffin. I started at the beginning.

Dear Luca,

Do you like scotch? I remember you said you didn’t like the taste of beer. But we never did get around to comparing our taste in hard liquor. Why is that, you might ask? Let me remind you—because you stopped answering my letters eight damn years ago. I wanted to let you know, I’m still pissed off about that. My mum used to say I hold grudges. But I prefer to think of it as I remember the facts. And the fact of the matter is, you suck. There, I’ve said it. I’ve been holding that shit in for a long time. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not obsessive or anything. I don’t sit in my house thinking about you all day long. In fact, there have been months that go by when thoughts of you don’t even enter my brain. But then some random thing will pop into my head out of the blue. Like I’ll see some kid in a pram eating black licorice, and I’ll think of you. Side note—I’ve tried it again as an adult, and I still think it tastes like the bottom of my shoe, so perhaps it’s that you just have no taste. You probably don’t even like scotch. Anyway, I’m sure this letter won’t find its way to you. Or if by some miracle it does, you won’t answer. But if you’re reading this, you should know two things.

1. The Macallan 1926 is worth the extra cash. Goes down smooth.

2. You SUCK.

Later, traitor, Griffin

BLURB

I’d never forgotten him—a man I’d yet to meet.

Griffin Quinn was my childhood pen pal, the British boy who couldn’t have been more different from me. Over the years, through hundreds of letters, we became best friends, sharing our deepest, darkest secrets and forming a connection I never thought could break.

Until one day it did.

Then, out of the blue, a new letter arrived. A scathing one—one with eight years of pent-up anger. I had no choice but to finally come clean as to why I stopped writing.

Griffin forgave me, and somehow we were able to rekindle our childhood connection. Only now we were adults, and that connection had grown to a spark. Our letters quickly went from fun to flirty to downright dirty, revealing our wildest fantasies. So it only made sense that we would take our relationship to the next level and see each other in person.

Only Griff didn’t want to meet. He asked that I trust him and said it was for the best. But I wanted more—more Griff, in the flesh—so I took a big chance and went looking for him. People have done crazier things for love.

But what I found could change everything.

Blurb: “Bully to the highest degree. Heartless Hero is a must read for 2019.” Sarah, Musings of the Modern Belle

There are rules to being Abigail Crowne’s bodyguard, rules to watching the infamous billion-dollar heiress, otherwise known as the Reject Princess.

Never forget your place, always put the Crowne name above all else, and never, ever hurt the Reject.

Especially don’t torment the Reject.

Even if she is a spoiled brat.

So when an opportunity presents itself to punish her, you definitely shouldn’t take it.

Then again, Abigail loves to be tortured, and I’ve waited patiently for revenge.

I’ll keep her safe… with cruel protection.

Love is off limits with Abigail Crowne, but no one said anything about hate.

Excerpt: “Why are you here?” I asked.

Theo’s knuckle grazed my chin as a smile curled his lips. “Truth or promise?”

I had a thought as he perverted the sweet game we used to play as teenagers.

The thing between us was darkening, twisting, and I should run. Run before I darken and twist with it. I was the Wicked Bitch of the East Coast, but I wasn’t the words they called me. Not really. I liked to pretend I was as callous as my brother Grayson, as cunning as my sister Gemma.

In reality, I was soft. As they said, there was a reason I’d never fit in. I was a marshmallow. Easy to step on. Easier to squish.

So I answered. “Truth.”

Theo smiled, easy and slow. “I’m going to break your heart, and you’re going to thank me for it.”

About the Author: I started writing the moment I could read. My first characters were Wibbley and Squig and I used MS Word and clipart to bring them to life when I was a kid in elementary school. I started seriously thinking about being a writer in High School and I remember the day exactly, because it was such an epiphany. I was always so uncertain. You know how everyone was always asking what you wanted to be when you were older? Well I NEVER could decide.

I wanted to be a marine biologist.

An actor.

A FIRE FIGHTER (thank you Joaquin Phoenix in Ladder 49 for that phase).

One day it hit me—A WRITER. I could do it ALL. Then you couldn’t stop me from writing. I penned my first novel at fifteen (but don’t ask me to show it to you, because it’s like I was in competition to beat the thesaurus). When I was diagnosed with a chronic illness, writing became even more important, because it became my therapy. When I wrote my characters, suddenly I wasn’t so alone.

These days you can find me daydreaming about where to travel with my husband, singing in my car, or lost in the newest K drama. And planning my next novel, of course

Release Blitz & Excerpt: Fast Lane by Kristen Ashley

“Once he met her, it was and always would be Lyla.”
They were the gentlemen bad boys of rock. Forming in a garage in a small town in Indiana. Taking their licks on the road. Going balls to the wall until they made their big break.
And then Preacher McCade and the Roadmasters redefined rock and roll.
Guided by their tortured lead singer and songwriter, the Roadmasters changed the face of music in the 80s and 90s. And on their journey to becoming one of the most enduring bands in history—dogged by rumors and myth and fueled by drugs and booze—the Roadmasters had one touchstone.
Lyla.
Preacher’s muse, the love of his life, and the band’s moral compass, from the beginning, Lyla is along for the ride.
But with fame and acclaim in their grasp, they’ve entered the fast lane.
And they didn’t know it, but they were headed for a crash.

Lyla

Jesse:
They’d tease him, in the beginning, you know?
[Long pause]
[Off tape]
No, I don’t know.
Her name was Lyla. Dave and even Tim would tease him.
Lyla. Layla.
Get it?
[Another long pause]
They learned not to tease him, though.

I didn’t understand. Not in the beginning.
She was…
[Lengthy pause]
Not his scene.

Straight up, he didn’t seem to be hers, either.
Nothing seemed to be her scene.

We hooked up with her and her friends at the bar where we’d played, and she was not into it.
I mean, her friends and her, chalk and freakin’ cheese.
Serious.
She wasn’t into the bar, the music, the band.
Tight with her friends, you could tell, but us and everything around us?
Nope.

She didn’t even dress like them. Like a rocker-groupie girl.
She didn’t even dress eighties, Madonna teased out hair and rubber bracelets and lotsa lace. Or neon. Or whatever the fuck.
No, you know, that isn’t right.
She did.
Flashdance.
Shirt falling off her shoulder. Jeans. White Nike classics. Cortez. If I remember, with a blue swoop.
Nikes.
First time we saw Lyla, she was in Nikes.
[Smiles]

#2

Preach was an equal opportunity, benevolent almost-rock god.
I remember seeing him with his jeans bunched up to his knees, sitting on the side of the pool, his feet and calves in the water, her friends barely clothed in the water, wet and hanging off his legs and his every word, and he’d glance over at her.
When he was in the mood to spread his love, everyone was invited.
We all were nailing serious tail, but I don’t think anybody but Dave had had a threesome.
But that was not unusual for Preach.
Or more, you know?
That night, I had one girl, he had two, three were in with Tim and Dave, tripping, and Tommy was fucking another one in what we would find out later was one of the girls’ dad’s waterbed.
And looking back, I knew Preacher was more into her than the two he had.
I also got why.
Kind of.

Now, again, it was the eighties. We’re talkin’ Jane Fonda workout videos and Jamie Lee Curtis in that movie Perfect and one-pieces making a comeback because the legs were cut so far up the hips, a girl had to shave.
And Lyla was not…
[Pause]
That.
I mean, there was a reason anorexia became prevalent during that decade and didn’t let go. It wasn’t right, it wasn’t good, but it was the way it was.
But Lyla was not that way.
Tits and ass.
A lot.
Of both.
And, from what I could tell that night, bad attitude.
But fuck, the longer the night wore on, Preacher couldn’t keep his eyes off her.
She’d do a lap to clean up ashtrays or beer bottles or whatever the fuck, and honest to Christ, he didn’t miss a step.
Not that first step.
She had what they now politically correctly, but also, it’s gotta be said, just plain correctly call curves.
Freddie Mercury called them fat-bottomed girls.
But man, she was pretty.
Lotsa hair.
Perfect skin.
You know, and a way about her.
It was part that attitude.
Part the mystery.
You know, tell a man, “don’t touch, you’ll get burned,” he’ll become obsessed with the fire. It’s just how it is.
She screamed don’t touch.
And Preacher, man…
Preacher could be obsessive.
In a big way.

But it was the eyes.
I gotta believe, and this would prove true, in a way, if it wasn’t Preach, it would be somebody. Another rock star. A photographer. A painter. Someone would fall in the muse of Lyla’s eyes.
But as you know, it was Preacher.

Power. Passion. Betrayal.

RITA® Award-winning author Kennedy Ryan delivers the epic first installment of the All the King’s Men Duet.

Raised to rule, bred to lead and weaned on a diet of ruthless ambition. In a world of haves and have nots, my family has it all, and I want nothing to do with it.

My path takes me far from home and paints me as the black sheep. At odds with my father, I’m determined to build my own empire. I have rules, but Lennix Hunter is the exception to every one of them. From the moment we meet, something sparks between us. But my family stole from hers and my father is the man she hates most. I lied to have her, and would do anything to keep her. Though she tries to hate me, too, the inexorable pull between us will not be denied.

And neither will I.

Sneak Peek from The Kingmaker

A fat raindrop plops on my nose, sliding down the bridge, followed by another and then a wet succession. “Aw, hell.” I pull my jacket up on my elbows to provide some shelter for the two of us, but the rain trebles, more coming down and faster. “We still have four blocks before my place,” I say. “Sorry, but the weather is unpredictable this time of year.” Rain has already started molding the thin dress to her body, faithfully hugging every swell and curve. A hard shiver runs through her and her teeth chatter. “Come on.” I grab her hand and duck into an alleyway. An overhang provides a tiny patch of dry ground and shelter. “We may be able to wait it out. These showers sprout up and pass over like they never happened.” We’re sandwiched between two buildings and there is barely any light, but the moonlight finds her, sculpting shadows beneath her cheekbones and etching dark crescents of her lowered lashes. The rain has smeared her mascara, and water-slicked hair flattens to her head. She should look bedraggled, but she manages to be the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen. I bend, tentative at first, even after last night. Even after making love to her again this morning when I chased her up the stairs. I approach slowly, giving her the chance to refuse, but she doesn’t. She meets me, eyes open, lips eager, hands bunched in my wet hair. It’s a freshwater kiss, made of rain and passion. WANT MORE? Marley kept whining. She stomped her foot and shook her head at her father when he held out a stuffed giraffe. Nate swapped it out for a book, turning to a page and pointing at one of the pictures. She wasn’t interested. Marley fell back onto her butt as tears hit her cheeks. Her legs kicked against the floor with fury.

Nate pinched his eyes shut, ran a hand through his hair, and looked down at her. He appeared lost, and possibly on the brink of a melt-down himself.

He was overwhelmed, that was clear.

“Has she eaten dinner? Maybe she’s hungry,” I said, walking over to the play yard. On instinct, I bent over the gate and held out my arms. I wanted to soothe her somehow. I at least wanted to try. I hated seeing this sweet thing so upset.

Marley immediately stood up and came to me. When I got her on my hip, she settled down and played with the chain around my neck again.

“I don’t know what she is,” Nate replied. He held up his glasses and rubbed at his eyes. “I guess she could be hungry.”

“If you want, I can take her out there and she can eat with us. It’s just me and my kids.”

“Really?”

“Sure. What does she like off the menu?”

He looked at Marley, thinking hard on that question. “Normal two-year-old stuff?” Our gazes met. I saw the embarrassment in his eyes before he looked down and away. “Sorry. I really don’t know what she likes. I haven’t spent much time with her.” He gripped the back of his neck, mumbling, “I’m sure that’s obvious right now.”

His shame was palpable.

Something about the way Nate spoke, the humiliation in his voice, the rejection—he wanted to know his daughter. He wanted to have the answer to any question I could ask him about her, and he didn’t know how.

Everything inside me that made me who I was, wanted to help him.

Chapter One

“Keep talking there, Twinkletoes, I’ll marry your dad and make you my stepchild.” I glared at three teenage girls who were destined to grow-up and be a drain on some man’s wallet as they walked past me on their way to the yellow Volkswagen Beetle.
“God, how manly.”
“I bet she’s single.”
“Hasn’t she ever heard of makeup?”
But seriously, what was up with teenagers these days? I was a fucking deputy in a fucking uniform and they still had the audacity to give me attitude.
“If I ever say, that I want to be a cop, shoot me, will you?” One of the girls asked her friends.
“They won’t have to, I’ll do it for them,” I said in a low whisper. The entire time they were cataloging my flaws and their disdain for my job, I was straddling my sheriff’s motorcycle, while parked in a convenience store’s parking lot. The owner had been having problems with teenagers coming in after school harassing his patrons. Case and point.
A loud wolf whistle pierced the air, and I turned to find a boy hanging out of a truck. I rolled my eyes as the girls started to giggle.
“Oh my god, Devin just whistled at you,” one of the girls said.
“I can’t believe it, does that mean he thinks I’m pretty?”
“Oh, Breezy, of course it does. You’re so pretty,” her friends reassured her.
“You really think so? I need to lose weight . . .”
I smiled as I watched her twirl one loose strand around a finger. The only thing missing was her blowing a giant wad of bubble gum. It was all a little too cliché for me.
The boys in the truck pulled out and the girls got into their car and chased them. In their pursuit they plowed through an intersection ignoring a stop sign and cutting off several cars.
I rolled my eyes. Fuck.
Nothing beat the feeling of twisting the throttle, the sun beating down on my back, or the vibration between my legs. Holy shit, I couldn’t believe that I just thought that, but it was true. There was just something about being on a Harley, and I was one of the lucky few who got to ride to my heart’s content since I not only rode for fun but also rode for work.
Okay, one thing beat all of that—the adrenaline rush I got every time I flipped on my lights, which I did a second before I went after the pale yellow Volkswagen Beetle. Some days, karma was a bitch and others she was your best friend, kind of like today. Yeah, Karma and I, we go way back.
“Well, hello, ladies, it seems that you were in a hurry.” I slightly lowered my sunglasses and smirked at three stunned teenagers. “I’m going to need to see your license and registration.”
“I can’t get a ticket; I’ll be grounded from my car.”
“You probably should have thought about that before you blew threw the stop sign and cut off those other vehicles.”
“But we came out of the parking lot and turned right. The stop sign is, like, right there, she already stopped and checked when she came out,” the blonde explained, obviously acting as the leader of the pack from the passenger seat.
“Number one, that doesn’t matter. You have to stop at every stop sign. Number two, you didn’t stop at the one in the parking lot either.”
“Just give me the ticket.” The driver turned to her friends. “I’ll just pay it before anyone knows.”
“I’m actually writing you for two different tickets for failure to come to a complete stop as well as reckless driving since you cut off those other cars.” I glanced down at the registration I held in my hands. “Oh, this isn’t your name on the title of the car.”
“No, it’s my dad’s. He gave me the car for my birthday.”
“I’m going to have to call your parents since it is in his name.” I glanced down at her driver’s license and bit back a scoff. Breezy Kidd, yes, that was her fucking name, no shit.
“You can’t do that,” the girl in the passenger seat demanded. “This is harassment. You are harassing us.”
I leaned down so I was at eye level. “What’s your name?”
“I don’t have to tell you.”
“Umm, actually you do. All three of you have to hand your IDs over to me.”
The one girl in the back seat complied and passed hers forward, but the girl in the passenger seat was on my last nerve. “I don’t have it with me.”
“Here’s the issue. Your friend Breezy is eighteen and has committed enough traffic violations that I can write her up for illegal right hand turn, failure to yield right away, careless driving, illegal lane change, and reckless driving, which is criminal, requires her attendance in front of a judge, and can cause her car to be impounded. So, either you comply with the law or the law will not be in your favor.”
Breezy jerked her head and stared at the passenger. “Hand over your license.”
“I’d listen to your friend. Because if the car is impounded, I’m going to have to call a squad car to come get you until you present your ID. We need to make sure you don’t have any warrants or that you aren’t a minor.” Finally getting through to her, she grabbed her license from her bag and handed it to me. I looked at the name. Brittany. Why wasn’t I shocked? “Now I’ll start with you, give me your parent’s phone number,” I said to the driver. She called her dad and was instantly in tears. Clearly, she knew how to play him. The girl in the back seat, Mikayla, who’d been the quietest, called her mom, had tears in her eyes, and even apologized to me . . . there was hope for the future yet. Brittany called her mom, and it was clear that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
“Mom, Breezey got pulled over. Some female cop.” The girl paused, and it didn’t take Neil Fucking Armstrong to figure out that they were bashing me. “Yeah, probably, she looks like she was probably checking us out. You’re right, that’s probably why she pulled us over. Okay. Love you too, bye.”
When all three were done, I’d written Breezy a ticket with three different citations, and then I let them go. And whoever said that being cop wasn’t fun?
It was close to quitting time, so I eased into traffic and headed back toward the stations, but before I got far, my radio crackled with an incoming a call.
“Orange County, Commercial, Signal twenty-nine, Alpha, 441 and Waterbridge.”
I wanted to get home as much as the next person, but I was only two blocks away, and as much as I hated it, this was part of my job too.
“Thirteen-seventeen, reference signal twenty-nine commercial alpha, I’m nearby. Assign it to me.”
“Orange County copies, seventeen thirty-three. Alarm, Hampton Storage, monitoring company has tried to get in contact with the property owner. Internal motion sensor has not been triggered.”
“Ten ninety-seven.” I stopped talking after giving dispatch the code that told them I was on scene. I dismounted my bike and checked the doors to the main building, which were all locked. I pulled a card out of my pocket and stuck it through the mail slot, proof that I was here and checked. The sign said that they closed at six PM, and since it was ten of six, my guess was that someone cut out early today.
With nothing of note happening out front, I got back on my bike and slowly drove around toward the back. The alarm was still blaring as I rounded the corner to find the back gates wide open and two men on Harleys parked in front of a closed unit.
Even from forty yards away, I could tell that the men were wearing cuts and not just any cuts, they were members of the Heretics. Orlando had several biker gangs, many being one percenters. Most of them lived by the rule: leave us the fuck alone and we will leave you the fuck alone. But not the Heretics. Nope, they were the bullies. The I-want-to-start-a-fight-just-because-I-can type. The type of gang that will kick someone’s ass because they thought it made them look big. When they were done, their victims were seldom left breathing.
So, I stayed where I was and called into dispatch.
“Thirteen-seventeen, ten fifty-six, Hamptons Storage on Waterbridge, signal forty-four, expedite, multiple subjects, known signal zero.” That sounded good, I needed backup because they were people who were known to be armed and dangerous.
Retreating wasn’t an option, I was a deputy, this was my job, and the last thing I wanted was to turn my back on known killers.
At that moment, I wished for a car full of snotty teenagers over these guys, I could handle them. I said a prayer for backup to be nearby and that they would hurry, and I had just finished it about the same time the subjects turned in my direction. I could feel their eyes boring into me. Chills went down my spine, and I flipped my snap on my holster to give my fingers something to do, my heart thumping as the two riders rode over to me.
They were night and day, the one on the left looked like Hollywood’s version of scary biker dude. His cut read Sergeant at Arms, Bladder.
Bladder
What kind of name was Bladder? He was of medium build, had a beard that could double as a rat’s nest, chains that hung from his pockets to his belt loops, and his face was . . . well . . . all I could do was hear Ham’s voice from The Sandlot. “You know, if my dog were as ugly as you, I’d shave his butt and tell him to walk backwards.”
The other guy also had a beard, but his was what they called a groomed beard—like he actually gave a damn if crumbs fell onto his face. He probably weighed two hundred pounds, and his cut read Candy. I would never understand where bikers get their names. He was on his bike, so I had to take that into account, but I would put him at least six feet.
As I continued my mental catalog, I took in his dirty-blond hair, his muscular arms. I studied the shaped of his face, sloping nose, hooded eyes, and then froze when I locked on to hazel eyes. Eyes that I still saw in my dreams. My eyes darted to his upper lip, and I caught myself before I could lean forward, not to touch him but to get a closer look at the scar there, it wasn’t as pronounced as the one Liam had when we were kids, but that was normal, scars faded over time, right?
It was as if I was eight years old again and he had been reading me Harry Potter. He’d taken me to the park and we both picked sticks to make into wands. When we got back to his house, he’d grabbed a pocketknife and had attempted to carve my name into my “wand.” When he tried to smooth the edges, he pulled back on the blade and lost control and cut his lip. He ended up getting stitches.
It wasn’t long after that when he left during the night without saying goodbye, but I knew this was him.
“Liam?” I asked.
